Thin Ties Are Making A Comeback

What comes around goes around. A perfect example is mens thin neckties. They first came into style at the beggining of the 20th century, only to reemerge in the 50′s and yet again in the 80′s. Now they are returning to fashion again with the likes of Leonardo DeCaprio, Will Arnett and other celebrities choosing thin black neckties to accessorize their tuxedos at the recent Golden Globes Awards.

Narrow Ties of the 20′s

It is generally agreed that narrow men’s neckties range in size from 1 to 3 inches across the widest section of the necktie. Both pointed ties and square end thin neckties during the first ten years of the 20th century were slender, varying from 2 to 2 inches wide. Some ties measuring as skinny as 1 inches, were even referred to popularlly at the time as string ties. Styles didnt change the following decade because of lack of materials brought about by World War I. Narrow neckties around 2 inches were worn into the late 20s, but wouldnt resurface again until the 50′s.

In the period after the war, as notes Sarah Gibbings, in her essential book “The Tie: Trends and Traditions”, the austerity of the second world war left no funds, no surplus supplies or factories in Europe. This compelled British soldiers to turn to the new world for a new direction, something to show off their positive postwar hopes and dreams. Former soldiers were looking for colorful and bold, something positive and modern. The United States delivered with a toward the broader, florid and brightly colored ties which went on to set the style for the 1940′s and early 1950′s. In order to display these neckties, the suit jacket lapels became broader and jackets were buttoned lower which provided more space for the tie.

Narrow Neckties of the 1950′s

By the mid 1950′s, the world’s reply to the a recession, the Korean War and the Cold War dampned the American psyche. The more somber mood was reflected in mens suits. Fashions were becoming more unadventerous, with slimmer pants, smaller lapels and slimmer ties to match. glowing and brilliant color combinations were substituted by subdued patterns and solid colors. This hearlded the official rebirth of the quintessential skinny black tie.

Narrow neckties of the early rock era were the style among young men who were fans of stars such as Elvis who regularly wore thin ties. By the middle of the 60′s ties as narrow as 1 inch were worn by most business men and young men alike.

The 80′s Resurgence of the Thin Tie

As the excessive style fashion of the 1970′s came to an end the skinny necktie returned, primarly as a repudiation of the previous decade’s flights of fancy.

The Popular Trend Towards Narrow Ties

Skinny ties are popular today. Just the other day attorney Anthony Romero, executive director of the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) appeared on the Colbert Report sporting a dark narrow necktie. During the episode, Stephen Colbert asked him to find something wrong with him. After a brief glance at Colberts wide yellow foulard style tie, Romero quickly replied, That tie is not my favorite, which predictably got lots of of laughs at the hosts expense.

Style is a matter of personal taste and fashion trends but a well dressed man sporting a extraordinary thin necktie will always stay classy. Original classic narrow neckties from the 1950′s, 60′s and 80′s are available online when searching for “vintage skinny ties”. Try one today!
