Your Guide to Mad Men Narrow Ties

Mad Men is not only a phenomona on the AMC channel, the fabulous vintage skinny neckties seen on the show are becoming a popular trend in today’s fashion. The Mad Men TV show happens in the beginning of the 1960s when thin neckties were at their hight. Now men’s periodicals like GQ are promoting the trend and even mens designers are examining the show for inspiration on vintage ties. If anybody wants to try this vintage style then try searching for authentic classic 1950′s or 1960′s narrow ties.

When to Wear Narrow Neckties:

Wearing Thin or classic neckties allow the man to dress up or down depending on the situation. The best thing is that everyone from young boys to executives are pulling off this look which gives them an instant cool edge.

For business men, a patterned, all purpose suit or plaid shirt can be teamed up with a solid classic men’s ties. Keep the look business like by choosing a tie that is slightly thinner than usual, creating the projection of self-assurance and power. Sometimes the classic skinny tie has a small but special flourish half way up the tie which can bring a bit of attention to an otherwise boring business suit.

At a black tie event a narrow necktie, paired with a traditional black suit and white button down shirt is a look that never goes out of style. For a less formal look, a narrow necktie can also be combined with a cotton shirt and a vest. Roll up the sleeves on a long sleeved shirt or go with short sleeves and add a striped or bold colored thin necktie to create a playful and laid back style, perfect for young men.

Though thin neckties look great, their narrowness means they are just not the best style for bigger men. Buff, muscular men will feel more appropiate with a normal width necktie. Also, the narrow necktie look is more in tune with younger men. To still get the look of the Mad Man television show, older men and more buff men can wear a tie that is skinny, but a little wider than the 2 inch neckties typically worn as skinny ties.

Pure silk ties in soft light blues, muted grays, browns and greens carry off the classic look that held court during the rockability era. Of course, skinny neckties in plaid, featuring graphics, vivid reds, purples and oranges can also be worn. When going with a bright necktie remember that the more eye catching the tie is, the more tuned down the rest of the outfit should be, to keep from looking too ostentatious.

Buying a Vintage Thin Necktie

Second hand shops are a great place to look for vintage ties. The Mad Men tv show has inspired several fashion designers to offer classic looks. Among them is fashion designer Michael Kors who has created an early 60s inspired line. Classic neckties from the era can be acquired online as well. Narrow ties direct from the 1950′s and 1960′s can be found with a google search.
