Fashion 101 – Care Tips for Your Men’s Ties

Small but terrible – that is how I like to describe men’s tie. That is because as far as I’m concerned, ties can make or break an outfit when going for formal wear. Also, they can be very expensive especially if you want to have the ones with the best quality and looks. For these reasons, ties should always be given proper care because they can also get the most wear and tear among all the items in your closet.

So here are some of the most common things you can do to care for your precious neckties.

1. Try to alternate use of your ties. If you can, buy at least two of every color that can match your shirts and suits. This way you minimize usage of each and prolong their life.

2. If you’re the guy who prefer hanging your ties on your closet with the suit they go with, try draping it around the collar of the coat. This will minimize the chance of them getting damaged when you get other items from your closet.

3. When wearing your ties, try to minimize creasing and wrinkles by making sure you don’t get them in situation where they get creased or wrinkled.

4. Use tie hangers to store your neckties. These are specialized hangers available in different shops that hold single tie to reduce the chance of wrinkling.

5. When not in use, avoid leaving your tie in a knot as this will crease the fabric that can weaken the fabric. This will also make them more unmanageable the next time to are going to wear them.

6. Try to move your ties when in your closet every once in a while to prevent unnecessary creasing. You can do it at least every time you open your closet to get something from it.

7. If you have knitted ties, laying them flat or rolled up and keeping them in a drawer is a much better way of storing it instead of hanging them in your closet. Roll the narrow end of the tie first and leave it for a day or two to remove the wrinkles.

8. Never ever bring your neckties to the dry cleaners.

9. Never press your ties as this will diminish the overall appearance of the tie.

10. If you have water spots on your tie, use a small piece of fabric of the same material to rub the lightly.

11. Use a small clean cloth dipped in club soda to remove stains on your tie.

12. For tougher stains, use steam to remove them. You can either use steam from an iron or on top of a boiling kettle, always making sure that nothing else touch the fabric. You can use a dry spot remover to dry off the tie.

13. When untying your necktie, never slip the small end out of the knot because doing this can cause damage to your tie.

So there you have it. Just following these simple tips can help you save your ties and give more life to them. Not only will you make sure that you will always have a snappy looking tie, but also save some cash from always replacing them.
