A Way To Avoid Rising Tuition Costs
Private colleges and universities are known for small class sizes where students receive individual attention. These same institutions tend to offer frequent opportunities for involvement, more study abroad opportunities and boast higher graduation and retention rates, according to the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities. Many also associate a private education with pricey tuition. People can however avoid that high cost by taking advantage of their grant for online college.
The cost of private colleges and universities might not be as out of reach as some people think, however. As families and students struggle to pay for college, private institutions are accelerating and increasing their financial aid offerings, according to a recent report in Bloomberg Businesweek. Where the fall 2010 tuition and fees at private colleges and universities on average are 4.5 percent higher than those of last year, scholarships, grants and other forms of financial aid are up 6.8 percent, a June report from the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities shows.
Private institutions aren’t only slowing tuition hikes and enhancing scholarships for campus and distance learning programs. In some instances, they’re freezing tuition and offering three-year degree programs, National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities President David L. Warren was quoted in a news release as saying. “Our colleges are redoubling their efforts to keep out of pocket costs as low as possible for students and families. . . ,” National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities President David L. Warren was quoted in a news release as saying. “The bottom line for consumers is that they should not rule out a private college just because of the price tag.”
With any college, university or technical school, there’s what’s known as a “published” rate, or “sticker price,” for tuition and fees. There’s also what’s known as the net price, which is what families and students actually pay after varied forms of tuition assistance are considered. Some agencies incorporate federal tax credits and deductions in before arriving at a net price; others incorporate loans that have to be repaid. The College Board website shows that the published rate for private colleges and universities is about $26,273 and that the net price, which also takes into account federal tax benefits, is about $11,870. In Wisconsin for the 2008-2009 academic year, private college and university students paid an average $4,737 after receiving grants, scholarships and student loans, according to the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities website. When it came to financial aid packages for freshmen, the association website notes, the average student received nearly $18,500, with scholarships and grants that don’t have to be repaid accounting for 71 percent, the website notes.
The National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities website provides a list of institutions that have frozen their tuition at last year’s rates and those that offer three-year bachelor’s degree programs. The AIB College of Business in Iowa, Fresno Pacific University in California, The Sage Colleges in New York state and Culver-Stockton College in Missouri are among those that have kept tuition rates in check, the site shows. Ursuline College in Ohio and the University of Akron have launched three-year bachelor’s degree programs, according to the website. Resources like this help students and families take the greatest advantage of their online degree.
Distance learning programs provide additional opportunities to save money – in this instance, on costs associated with meal plans and commuting. While distance learning programs aren’t exclusive to private colleges and universities they are growing among them, according to a recent USA Today report. Christian colleges and universities particularly have an edge in this area in that many Americans have religious ties, according to what an Eduventures consulting group analyst told USA Today.
Distance learning can be particularly appealing to students who have busy schedules that might involve family and workplace responsibilities. Students who enroll in online learning programs might take courses that are entirely online or participate in hybrid programs, spending some time on campus. Scholarships and grants for campus and distance learning programs are often based on a variety of factors.
The Minnesota Private College Fund alone administers an array of scholarships for its 17 member institutions. Students in some instances might have to demonstrate academic success or community involvement and in others might have had to overcome barriers to pursue a degree. The Private College Fund also awards scholarships to students studying specific subjects.
Students interested in scholarships and grants online for campus and distance college and university offerings at private institutions might also apply to those offered by large corporations, non-profit organizations, community and civic groups. Scholarships are typically provided when the institution of a student’s choice is accredited by a nationally recognized agency, with this pertinent to both traditional and online education. Advisers have recommended that students decide on a college or university by considering their individual interests, needs and goals and then comparing costs after tuition assistance is factored in. The advisors at most schools want the students to have all the information available for students to fully leverage their undergraduate scholarship.

School Ties $2.87 Brendan Fraser plays a student attending a wealthy boarding school on a football scholarship in the 1950s. When the other kids find out he’s Jewish–a fact he’s been hiding–his fortunes and relationships instantly change.
